World Drug Day 2026 highlighted a rapidly changing global drug market

World Drug Day was marked on 26 June 2026 under the theme “World drug problem: persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses.” The campaign drew attention to the rapid evolution of illicit drug markets. UNODC highlighted the continued growth of cocaine production, seizures and use, as well as the expansion of synthetic drugs into new markets, supported by low production costs, reduced risk of detection and the increasing use of digital technologies by criminal groups.

The campaign underlined the need for coordinated and innovative responses from governments, international organisations, civil society and communities. Key priorities included stronger prevention, particularly for young people and vulnerable groups, better data collection, earlier identification of new substances, more effective action against trafficking networks, and stronger criminal justice responses. UNODC also stressed the importance of alternative development programmes that support farmers in moving from illicit crop cultivation to sustainable legal livelihoods.

World Drug Day 2026 was supported by the release of the World Drug Report 2026, which examined developments in drug use, production and trafficking, as well as their broader effects on health, governance, safety and security. The campaign’s central message was that drug markets continue to adapt quickly, and that prevention, policy and services must keep pace with these changes.
