Alcohol deceives you. Only 0 has 0 consequences.

Coinciding with the special Easter Week operation, the General Directorate of Traffic is launching a new awareness campaign focusing on alcohol as a risk factor in traffic accidents. Through a traditional children’s song and the common excuses people who have consumed alcohol give for getting behind the wheel, the campaign depicts the tragic consequences of this irresponsible attitude.

The chosen slogan for this occasion is “Alcohol deceives you. Only 0 has 0 consequences.” The campaign features children, who suffer the consequences of traffic accidents caused by alcohol consumption, repeating these familiar excuses: “two drinks won’t make you test positive,” “I live five minutes away,” “it was only one drink,” “can’t you see I’m in control,” or “nothing has ever happened to me,” among others.

The main reason the DGT chose this theme is that alcohol is present as a contributing factor or a trigger in 1 out of every 3 fatal traffic accidents. Moreover, according to the 2021 report “Toxicological Findings in Fatal Traffic Accident Victims” by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, almost half of the drivers killed in traffic accidents who were autopsied had alcohol and/or other drugs in their blood, a percentage that rises to 75% specifically for alcohol, all with very high blood alcohol levels (equal to or greater than 1.2 g/L). In addition, in 2021, there were 54,764 criminal convictions for traffic offences involving driving with very high alcohol levels.

The campaign aims, once again, to dispel many people’s perception that the risk of an accident is only associated with very high levels of alcohol consumption when, in reality, the adverse effects of alcohol on driving ability are also observed at low consumption levels. That’s why the traffic authority insists that only 0 has 0 consequences.
