In a special episode of The Recovery Space, released for Alcohol Awareness Week, therapists Spencer and Olivia from Steps Together explore how drinking can gradually move from a way of coping with difficult emotions into dependency. Their conversation focuses not only on alcohol itself, but also on the trauma, stress, fear, shame and isolation that may lie beneath harmful drinking. What can appear socially as being the “life and soul of the party” may hide a very different reality behind closed doors.
Spencer speaks openly about his own experience of recovery and how alcohol became something he relied on to avoid painful feelings. He describes the exhausting cycle of drinking, secrecy, denial and promises to stop, followed by the same pattern beginning again. One of the episode’s most memorable ideas is learning to turn “a trigger into a glimmer”, transforming experiences once associated with anger, grief or drinking into reminders of gratitude, connection and recovery.
The discussion also gives important attention to partners and family members. Olivia explains that supporting someone does not mean sacrificing your own mental wellbeing or taking responsibility for choices only that person can make. Clear boundaries, access to support and recognition that family members may also experience shame, guilt and isolation are essential. Loving someone with an addiction and protecting yourself are not contradictory, and repeatedly shielding someone from the consequences of their behaviour may unintentionally help the harmful cycle continue.
The Recovery Space is a therapist-led series produced by Steps Together, a UK provider of residential and non-residential support for addiction, mental health and wellbeing. The organisation also provides treatment for alcohol dependency, aftercare and guidance for families affected by addiction. This episode offers a personal and compassionate reminder that recovery often begins with honesty, but lasting change is also built through professional help, supportive relationships and the willingness to take the next step.
