Finnish campaign encourages safer celebrations before Vappu

Finland’s Kippistä korkeintaan kohtuudella campaign is reminding people that the feeling of celebration does not have to come from alcohol. Led by EHYT ry and the Finnish Brain Injury Association, the campaign encourages adults to think about their own drinking habits during the spring celebration season, especially around Vappu (Finland’s May Day celebration), and to make choices that support wellbeing and safety.

The campaign’s message is simple: celebrations matter, but alcohol does not need to be at the centre of them. It invites people to ask whether alcohol automatically belongs to every festive moment, whether they could drink less, and how their drinking may affect those around them. Practical tips include choosing lower-alcohol drinks and smaller servings, eating before drinking, alternating with water or alcohol-free drinks, and deciding in advance to keep to a moderate pace.

A strong focus this year is on brain health and accident prevention. The campaign materials highlight that even two alcoholic drinks can significantly affect balance, coordination, fine motor skills and reaction times, increasing the risk of injuries and accidents. They also note that around half of brain injuries occur under the influence of alcohol, and that most alcohol-related brain injuries are connected not to long-term problem drinking, but to occasional heavy drinking.

The campaign is being carried out from 24 to 30 April 2026, with events and activities across Finland organised by EHYT, the Finnish Brain Injury Association and their member associations. Local events include mocktail tastings, “mukipingis”, wheels of fortune and other participatory activities designed to start conversations in a positive way. The campaign does not ask people to give up celebration, but to enjoy it with more awareness, more safety and perhaps more room for alcohol-free choices.
