Tips for Teens

In their “Tips for Teens” series, SAMHSA has included factsheets on various substances, each with its unique set of risks and misconceptions. They focus on alcohol, marijuana, opioids, cocaine, and tobacco – substances often encountered during adolescence. Each factsheet provides short-term and long-term effects of these substances, lists signs of use, and dispels commonly associated myths. They are reliable sources of information with references and citations that could be accessed for further reading.

The fact sheet titled “Tips for Teens: The Truth About Alcohol” not only discusses the impacts of alcohol use but also breaks down prevalent myths. Similarly, the fact sheets on marijuana, opioids, cocaine, and tobacco use offer concrete, factual information, helping teens to make informed decisions and steer clear of misinformation.

Beyond substance-specific factsheets, SAMHSA has also published “Talk. They Hear You: Why You Should Talk with Your Child About Alcohol and Other Drugs – Fact Sheet.” This fact sheet underscores the importance of open and honest communication between parents and their children about substance use. It explains why this dialogue is crucial and gives parents a roadmap for broaching these sensitive topics.

Finally, the “Underage Drinking: Myths vs Facts” fact sheet is specifically geared toward preteens and teens, debunking common myths about youth alcohol use and contrasting them with factual information. This sheet is a helpful resource for parents and prevention professionals to initiate crucial conversations about underage drinking and alcohol misuse.

SAMHSA’s “Tips for Teens” fact sheets serve as an important toolkit for teenagers, parents, educators, and healthcare providers alike. These fact sheets are shaping a more informed and safer environment for our teens by dispelling myths, providing factual information, and advocating open dialogues.
