FASD Awareness Month puts lived experience and community action at the centre

FASD Awareness Month has begun with a new campaign programme from Proof Alliance that asks communities to do more than simply recognise the term FASD. Under the message “Glow Red. Engage. Learn. Take Action,” the organisation is combining public awareness with lived experience, education and visible community participation.

The month opened with a virtual panel featuring people with lived experience of FASD, sharing their perspectives on what it means to live with FASD and what communities can do to become more supportive and inclusive. Putting these voices at the centre matters because awareness should not only be about explaining a condition to others, but also about listening to the people directly affected.

Proof Alliance is also encouraging families and communities to “Glow Red” for FASD Awareness Day on 9 September. Free family kits include materials for homes and neighbourhoods, while participants are encouraged to use red lights, signs, ribbons and social media to start conversations about FASD.

The approach reflects an increasingly important development in FASD communication. Prevention of prenatal alcohol exposure remains essential, but awareness must also include understanding, early support, inclusion and respect for people who live with FASD throughout their lives.
