India launches 100-week youth campaign against substance use

India has formally launched the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, a nationwide initiative intended to mobilise young people against alcohol and other drug use over the next 100 weeks.

The campaign invites young people to take a public pledge, encourage their families and peers to avoid intoxicating substances, and participate in local awareness and community activities. A dedicated online platform now provides pledge registration, certificates and information about campaign events across India.

The scale and duration of the initiative are notable. Rather than concentrating activity around one awareness day, the 100-week structure creates the possibility of sustained participation through schools, universities, youth organisations and local communities.

The campaign’s impact will depend on what happens beyond the pledge. Effective prevention will require credible education, open communication with young people, links to treatment and support, and attention to the wider social and commercial factors that influence substance use.
