Peruvian-born country and Americana artist Fabrizio has released “Before the Soul Goes to Waste,” a deeply personal song about alcohol addiction, relapse and the decision to seek a different life. Rather than describing recovery as a simple victory, the song captures the fear, shame and exhaustion that can accompany repeated attempts to stop drinking. Its central warning is expressed through the image of rescuing a person before alcohol destroys not only the body, but also their identity, relationships and sense of purpose.

The lyrics trace how alcohol initially appeared to offer comfort, but gradually became an enemy. Fabrizio remembers being young and vulnerable when drinking took hold, using alcohol to cover emotional wounds and repeatedly waking with regret. He also describes the growing craving, the fear that another relapse could become permanent, and the way addiction can weaken judgment until resistance feels almost impossible. The line “I don’t trust the bottle or its intentions for my life” becomes both the song’s emotional centre and a clear rejection of the idea that alcohol is a harmless companion.

The song is closely connected to Fabrizio’s own story. Born in Peru, he moved to the United States at the age of 15 without speaking English and initially followed a conventional path through school and different sales jobs. Inspired by artists including Townes Van Zandt, Tyler Childers and Colter Wall, he eventually taught himself to play guitar and began sharing performances online. His unusually deep voice attracted growing attention, but behind that success, alcohol was becoming increasingly difficult to control. The accompanying documentary describes how drinking shifted from something manageable into something that was taking over his life, leading him to make the decision to stop.

Sobriety also opened a new creative direction. Fabrizio began writing songs as a way of processing his experiences, sharing unfinished and highly personal clips that quickly connected with people who recognised their own struggles in them. “Before the Soul Goes to Waste” became part of Recovery, a five-song EP released on July 24, centred on sobriety, healing and rebuilding. Fabrizio says he hopes listeners facing addiction understand that choosing recovery can be frightening, but that change remains possible even when the situation feels hopeless.
