Short conversations about addiction, drinking and recovery

The Addiction & Recovery podcast from the InterCoast Media Network has recently released a rapid series of short educational episodes exploring addiction, alcohol use, recovery and related public health questions. Most episodes run for only four or five minutes, making them accessible introductions to topics that are often complex, sensitive and easily misunderstood. The podcast describes its purpose as providing daily educational segments on addiction science, treatment developments, recovery and public policy.

The recent episodes focus particularly on the boundaries between different patterns of alcohol and substance use. Topics include the differences between casual, risky and dependent use, drinking as a response to stress, hidden or solitary drinking, “functional” dependence, shame in recovery and the medical definition of substance use disorder. Several episodes also challenge the idea that addiction is simply a matter of weak character or poor choices, instead presenting it as a condition shaped by biological, psychological, social and environmental factors.

The short format does not allow for an exhaustive examination of each subject, and several episodes address closely related questions from slightly different angles. Still, the collection can serve as a useful entry point for listeners who want to reconsider common assumptions about addiction and recognise that harmful substance use does not always match the most visible stereotypes. It may also provide professionals and advocates with brief materials that can open a wider conversation about prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery.

Understanding Increasing Amounts in Recovery Addiction & Recovery

Description: This episode discusses the concept of increasing amounts in the context of addiction and behavioral health. It explains how individuals may gradually require more of a substance or behavior to achieve the same effect, and emphasizes that an increase does not automatically indicate addiction or loss of control. Understanding these nuances is essential for informed discussions about recovery and behavioral health, particularly in educational settings related to substance use counseling.
