Wrap It Up Before You Wuk It Up

The Ministry of Health and Social Development in the British Virgin Islands has launched its annual “Wrap It Up Before You Wuk It Up” campaign, encouraging residents and visitors to make safer choices during the 72nd Emancipation Festival. Running from 13 July to 7 August, the campaign combines culturally relevant messages with practical health advice on responsible alcohol use, sexual health and personal safety.

The campaign responds to the increased risks that can accompany major celebrations, including alcohol-related injuries, impaired driving and sexually transmitted infections. Its central message is that people should be able to enjoy the festival while also thinking ahead and avoiding decisions that could have lasting consequences.

Alcohol-related messages include not drinking and driving, choosing a sober driver, pacing alcohol consumption and alternating alcoholic drinks with water. Festival participants are also advised not to combine alcohol with prescribed antibiotics or other medicines without first consulting a healthcare professional.

The campaign will be supported through radio announcements, newsletters, social media content, educational messages and community outreach. By connecting alcohol awareness with the wider realities of festival life, the initiative offers a practical reminder that safer celebrations depend not only on individual enjoyment, but also on decisions that protect other people and the wider community.
