The Brazilian road-safety campaign “Trânsito Seguro, Motorista Campeão”, which translates as “Safe Traffic, Champion Driver,” is working to raise awareness of behaviours that put people at risk on the road. The initiative is led by the regional news platform UrbNews in partnership with Ceará’s State Traffic Department, Detran-CE, and the state’s Infrastructure Secretariat. It combines public education activities with digital content designed to make road-safety messages more accessible.
The campaign addresses several common causes of road danger, including alcohol consumption before driving, mobile phone use behind the wheel and failure to follow traffic rules. Its first public activity was held in Fortaleza on 24 June, around a Brazilian national football team match. By connecting the message with an occasion involving celebrations and alcohol consumption, the organisers sought to remind supporters to plan a safe journey home and avoid driving after drinking.
On 7 July, the project expanded with the launch of an educational web series. Its first episode, “Álcool e Direção”, or “Alcohol and Driving,” focuses on the dangers of combining alcohol use with driving. The production uses simple, everyday language to communicate the message that drinking affects a person’s ability to drive safely and that alcohol and driving should never be combined.
By bringing together face-to-face outreach, social media and short audiovisual materials, “Trânsito Seguro, Motorista Campeão” aims to reach people in the situations where road-safety decisions are actually made. The campaign’s approach shows how sporting events and digital storytelling can be used to reinforce a clear preventive message: celebrations should not end with someone driving after drinking.
