Not only alcohol makes the party

In a timely initiative, the Regional Secretariat for Health and Sports in the Azores, Portugal, through its Directorate for the Prevention and Combat of Dependencies, has launched an awareness campaign targeting adult alcohol consumption during the festive season. The campaign, aptly titled “Nem só de álcool se faz a festa” (Not Only Alcohol Makes the Party), marks a significant step in addressing the challenges of responsible alcohol consumption.

Utilizing the widespread reach of social media, the campaign features a series of short videos, along with stickers and flyers. These tools are designed to sensitize the public to the importance of reducing alcohol intake, particularly during a period known for its celebratory excesses.

Mónica Seidi, the Regional Secretary overseeing Health, emphasizes the need for a multi-departmental collaboration beyond the government. This includes local authorities, police forces, and firefighters. Tailoring the campaign’s message to suit different audience segments is crucial, considering the unique characteristics and needs of each population group.

The Autonomous Region of the Azores faces specific challenges in this area, as acknowledged by the governing officials. The Directorate for the Prevention and Combat of Dependencies has been commended for its efforts in bringing this critical issue to the forefront, especially during a time deeply rooted in local traditions.

The campaign’s launch session also delved into various related topics, such as the legal age for alcohol consumption and its impact on the healthy development of young people. It highlighted the importance of responsible drinking, the recognition that alcohol consumption is not without consequences, and the fact that alcohol is a depressant.

In concluding the session, the Regional Secretary underscored the ongoing nature of this effort, stating that “this is a journey that must continue, for this work is never truly finished, and we must never become complacent.”

Objective of the Campaign:

The Directorate for the Prevention and Combat of Dependencies aims for an intervention that considers the community where the actions take place. Recognizing that traditional Christmas celebrations often encourage alcohol consumption, the campaign addresses the personal and social harms that can result from it.

The campaign raises the question of how to encourage individuals to make informed decisions without creating resistance to a healthier relationship with festive occasions. It seeks to assist people in controlling their behaviour, enhancing enjoyment while reducing incidents and accidents that cause unnecessary suffering.

Underpinning this campaign is the belief that adults should have the freedom of choice. Thus, the campaign serves as a guide to more conscious and beneficial decision-making, ensuring that the festive season can be fully and joyously celebrated, making for a truly Happy Christmas!
