Let’s Talk… Alcohol Dependency

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has released an episode of its podcast series, Let’s Talk… Alcohol Dependency, bringing attention to a condition that affects many individuals and families but is still too rarely spoken about openly. In the episode, Alcohol Liaison Nurse Cheryl speaks with Sarah, who shares her personal experience of living with alcohol dependency, from hiding her drinking and feeling trapped, to reaching a point where she knew something had to change. What comes through strongly is how difficult dependency can be to understand from the outside, especially when shame, denial and fear keep people silent for years.

Sarah describes how her turning point came when she was admitted to hospital and, for the first time, someone recognised what was really happening. At first she resisted help, convinced that nobody could fix what she was going through. But the conversation shows how important it can be when support is built on trust, honesty and genuine understanding. Cheryl’s role was not simply to manage detox, but to help Sarah see that recovery would require continued support, daily effort and the courage to face life without alcohol as a coping mechanism.

What makes this podcast especially important is that it moves beyond stereotypes and shows alcohol dependency as a deeply human issue, often tied up with trauma, mental health, isolation and the need to feel safe. It also highlights that recovery does not end with detox, it continues through support services, peer networks, practical tools and everyday choices. Sarah’s story is honest, emotional and hopeful, and Cheryl’s reflections underline something that is too often forgotten: people struggling with alcohol dependency are not to be judged or dismissed, they are people who need understanding, support and the chance to rebuild.
