Dry January® is a collective, supportive challenge that invites people to take a one month pause from alcohol. Now followed worldwide by millions as an annual January moment, it will be officially launched in Luxembourg for the first time on 1 January 2026. The basic idea is simple: from 1 to 31 January, zero alcohol, as a way to step back and look at how alcohol fits into your life at the start of the year.
Participants can use the official Try Dry® app, developed by the UK organisation Alcohol Change UK, alongside regular motivational emails for those who register. The app (free on iOS and Android) helps people track progress day by day, see money saved, check in on health benefits, and receive personalised encouragement. The campaign also stresses that slipping up does not mean the whole month is “ruined”, every alcohol free day still counts, even though a full month break is the best way to feel the effects more clearly.
The materials highlight a range of commonly reported benefits, including better sleep, clearer skin, more energy, improved concentration, and for many people, better mood, lower stress, and more mental clarity. At the same time, it clearly notes that Dry January® is not suitable for people with alcohol dependence (for example, if stopping leads to physical withdrawal symptoms). For anyone who wants support or someone to talk to about alcohol use, the campaign points to several Luxembourg based services and organisations, including the Direction de la santé, CNAPA (the national addiction prevention centre), Quai 57 (arcus asbl), Fondation Cancer, and the Centre Thérapeutique d’Useldange (CTU), which specialises in treatment for dependence on alcohol, cannabis, and or medicines.
