No Judgment. No Stigma. Just Support.

For too long, the intense pressure of a career in corrections was met with limited support, often leaving staff to navigate complex stressors on their own. This environment gave rise to traditions like “choir practice” – meeting at bars to vent and de-stress – which, while appearing harmless, often normalized alcohol as a primary coping mechanism. By acknowledging the immense sacrifices and the “many hats” these professionals wear, the department is finally addressing the reality that high-stress roles require more than just a place to vent; they require healthy, sustainable ways to process the demands of the job.

The shift away from these outdated habits is vital because of the profound impact alcohol can have when used to mitigate life’s stressors. When drinking becomes the go-to strategy for relief, the negative consequences quickly spill over into every domain of life, from physical and mental health to the stability of relationships and the longevity of a career. Recognizing that substance use often masks deeper tensions is the first step in protecting the well-being of those who serve, ensuring that their personal lives are not the price paid for their professional dedication.

To build a healthier future, the department is proud to launch its inaugural alcohol awareness campaign: “No Judgment. No Stigma. Just Support.” This initiative is designed to empower staff and their families through education and accessible resources, replacing silence with support. Over the coming months, this campaign will utilize various platforms to provide the tools necessary for staff to lead fulfilling lives. By fostering a culture of awareness, the department is ensuring that seeking help is seen not as a weakness, but as a proactive step toward a resilient career and a balanced life.
