Akan’s new Christmas campaign turns a familiar expression into a challenge for leaders. Instead of walking around the porridge, the message is to have the conversation. Many leaders admit they dread difficult talks with employees, and almost four in ten choose not to act even when they are worried. During the holidays, when everything is wrapped in expectations of warmth and harmony, uncomfortable issues are even easier to push aside. The campaign argues that this is exactly when real leadership is needed the most.
To make this point visual, Akan gathered leaders on 12 November for an unusual Christmas event at Gamle Logen in Oslo. Together they walked around what was presented as the world’s largest bowl of porridge, a playful metaphor for how often we avoid direct conversations when something feels difficult. The idea was to mark both community and responsibility. According to the campaign, genuine leadership is about seeing people and taking the conversation when it matters.
The campaign also shares practical guidance for leaders who worry about how to begin. Early, caring conversations can prevent small problems from growing, and they do not need to be confrontational. The goal is not to extract confessions but to show concern and open a door. Leaders are encouraged to focus on observable facts, listen actively, set realistic expectations and revisit the conversation later. As Julie Brodtkorb from MEF puts it, taking the important conversation at the right time can change lives.
Akan reminds leaders that reactions vary. Some employees feel fear, shame or worry about consequences, and many will initially dismiss concerns. Still, research shows most people appreciate being seen. Even a single talk can spark change, while others may need more time and support. For leaders who feel unsure, Akan offers confidential guidance, courses and direct help to prepare for conversations they find difficult.
