…home safe

North Yorkshire Police has launched a new winter drink and drug driving campaign with a video that puts the focus on the real consequences of driving after drinking alcohol. The clip, produced with the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership, is aimed at men aged 17 to 29. This group has been involved in nine out of ten fatal drink or drug related collisions in the region since 2014, a pattern linked to thrill seeking and overconfidence behind the wheel.

Throughout December, roads policing officers will increase patrols during high risk times. Both marked and unmarked vehicles, along with roadside checkpoints, will be used to stop and test drivers across the county. The message is direct. If you drive over the limit, you face a driving ban of at least one year, an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison.

Inspector Clive Turner describes this month as a moment to remind people that driving under the influence is not just a legal issue, it is a risk that can change lives in an instant. Officers see this first hand when they have to tell families their loved one will not be coming home for Christmas. The advice from the police is clear. Avoid alcohol or drugs entirely if you plan to drive, because the only safe limit is none.
