It was My Normal

ASCERT has launched its Christmas campaign Give the Gift for the 25th, calling on schools and organisations across Northern Ireland to help create new normals for young people living with hidden harm. Behind the festive season, many children face the daily reality of parental substance use or mental health issues. Research shows that one in four children in Northern Ireland are affected. For them, this has become their normal, leaving many feeling isolated, confused, or ashamed.

Through its Steps to Cope service, ASCERT offers these young people confidential support, counselling, and resilience-building. The goal is simple but powerful: to help them understand that their situation is not their fault and that support is available. With compassion and early intervention, ASCERT helps them rebuild confidence and see a future where stability and care replace fear and uncertainty.

By hosting a festive fundraiser this Christmas, schools and organisations can help ASCERT reach more young people in need. Every pound raised will go directly toward supporting local children living with hidden harm, giving them the chance to experience a new normal — one where they feel safe, supported, and valued.
