Life Kit’s guide to a zero-alcohol month

Sober October is here, and for many it’s a chance to reset, reflect and discover what life feels like without alcohol. Staying sober for 31 days can sound simple in theory but often proves more challenging in practice. That’s where NPR’s Life Kit steps in with its Guide to Zero-Alcohol Month, a free newsletter series packed with tools and encouragement to help you stick with your goal.

Each week, subscribers receive practical advice on how to manage cravings, handle social pressure, and create a realistic alcohol-free plan. From mocktail recipes to mindfulness exercises, the series offers both practical tips and emotional support. As Denise Hamilton-Mace of Low No Drinker explains, giving up alcohol, even temporarily, is no small feat, and celebrating that achievement matters.

The newsletter also helps participants reflect on what they’ve learned by the end of the month. Millie Gooch, founder of Sober Girl Society, reminds us that taking a break not only benefits physical health but can spark honest conversations about our relationship with alcohol. When the series ends, subscribers continue to receive Life Kit’s regular guidance on lifestyle, health and well-being, making Sober October a starting point for longer-term growth.
