Prenatal alcohol and substance exposure is a leading cause of many common mental health, learning, and physical health conditions, and pre-conception health and lifestyle matter for both parents. Experts stress that there is no safe type, no safe amount, and no safe time for alcohol in pregnancy, including at conception.
Angela Geddes | Integrative Support & Wellness highlights that while risks like drinking and driving or unsafe transport for children are well recognized, the dangers of alcohol use during pregnancy receive far less attention. Alcohol, even before a pregnancy is confirmed, can cause lifelong mental and physical health challenges for the developing baby. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is more common than autism, Down’s syndrome, Tourette’s, and cerebral palsy combined.
Raising awareness is key to prevention and support. The campaign, backed by a Canadian military veteran, calls for a broader public conversation on preconception and prenatal health.
