Movidamente – Live the nightlife responsibly

The Province of Lecce has launched “Movidamente – Live the nightlife responsibly,” a project aimed at preventing road accidents linked to alcohol and drug use, especially among young people who frequent nightclubs and entertainment venues. The initiative combines awareness campaigns in discotheques with targeted evening and nighttime roadside checks. It was officially presented at Palazzo Adorno with the participation of local authorities, police, the Italian Red Cross, nightclub representatives, and student groups who will engage their peers during outreach events.

The first phase is the campaign “Amo, guidi tu? Decidi chi guida prima di bere!” (“I love you, are you driving? Decide who drives before drinking!”), taking place in Salento clubs from August 18 to 26. At each venue, staff will identify a designated driver, who will receive a campaign bracelet, a free non-alcoholic drink, and at the end of the night, the option to test their blood alcohol level. Those who meet the commitment may get free entry to future events. The evenings will also feature promotional videos, giveaways, and peer-to-peer engagement to encourage safe and enjoyable nights out.

In parallel, the provincial police, together with local municipal police and Red Cross medical staff, are conducting road checks in high-traffic nightlife areas across towns such as Gallipoli, Otranto, Nardò, Porto Cesareo, and Galatina. These controls, held mainly on weekends and during major events, target key roads near clubs and include distribution of information on the risks of driving under the influence. Early August checks have already involved over 100 vehicles and more than 110 individuals, with authorities reporting positive results in terms of prevention.

“Movidamente” is part of the national “Safe Mobility” initiative, funded by Italy’s national program against nighttime accidents. Lecce is one of only 20 provinces in the country, and one of just two in southern Italy, to receive this funding. The project reflects a broad local partnership, including the Prefecture of Lecce, with the shared goal of building a culture of safe mobility. By combining education, entertainment, and enforcement, the campaign seeks to protect lives while preserving the vibrant spirit of the region’s nightlife.
