When young people are given leadership roles, the result is not just stronger programs but stronger communities. In New Britain, the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) is putting that belief into action by involving youth in meaningful, pro-social activities that increase their confidence, skills, and protective factors. At the heart of this effort is the BEE Responsible initiative, which encourages young people to grow into responsible, substance-free individuals. It’s not just about saying no to drugs or alcohol—it’s about saying yes to purpose, voice, and self-direction.
Families, schools, and community members all play a role in this effort. Parents remain the most influential figures in a young person’s life, but the wider community must also step up. That’s where the Local Prevention Council comes in, bringing together diverse partners, from schools to service providers to local leaders, to create a shared front against substance misuse. Whether you’re looking for guidance, positive engagement, or just someone to talk to, the community is here to support you.
The YLC’s work is backed by the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, a national initiative that empowers local coalitions to reduce youth substance use through collaboration and resource sharing. Since its inception, DFC has shown that when multiple sectors of a community unite – law enforcement, parents, educators, business leaders, faith groups – real, lasting change is possible. The New Britain coalition is a living example of this success, using every available avenue to foster safe, healthy environments for youth.
And youth themselves are stepping up. A recent video titled Underage Drinking is Not a Minor Issue puts their voice front and center. One by one, young people speak about the spaces where they push themselves, express their creativity, and find strength, from sports to music to art. The message is simple and powerful: “I don’t need to drink to be in control. This is my time.” Prevention isn’t a policy or a slogan. It’s a daily decision, and a personal declaration of potential.
