As the USA Independence Day approaches, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding Americans that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. The Fourth of July is a time for celebrating freedom, but it’s also one of the deadliest periods on U.S. roads. From 2019 to 2023, over 2,650 people died in traffic crashes during this holiday stretch, and nearly 40% of drivers killed were drunk. The danger is highest among young adults aged 21 to 34, who accounted for almost half of the impaired driving fatalities.
The 2025 campaign urges everyone to plan ahead. If you intend to drink, make your transportation plans before the party starts. Don’t rely on your judgment after a few drinks — that’s when impairment takes over. Whether it’s calling a taxi, using a rideshare app, or arranging a designated driver, getting home safely is a responsibility that should never be left to chance.
This year’s campaign also emphasizes the role of friends and bystanders. If someone you’re with is considering driving impaired, step in. Take their keys, help them arrange a ride, and don’t let them risk their life or anyone else’s. Impaired decisions behind the wheel can lead to arrests, crashes, or worse — permanent loss of freedom or life.
There’s no excuse to drive impaired. Celebrate responsibly and help keep the roads safe. Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.
