Youth-led videos highlight why prevention starts at home

The Regional Youth Prevention Network’s latest youth-led video campaign shines a light on the real-life risks that teens face—and the critical role adults play in keeping them safe. The “Decision That Matters” video challenges the common myth that supplying alcohol to teens is harmless if done in a “safe environment.” Instead, it follows the story of a well-meaning parent whose choice leads to unexpected legal and emotional consequences. The message is clear: even one decision can have lasting impacts, and parents who provide alcohol to minors put their children and themselves at risk.

The campaign goes beyond alcohol, addressing two more crucial areas for families: safe alcohol storage and mental health. “Lock It Up” highlights that while open communication is important, parents also need to physically secure alcohol at home, as teens often find ways to access it if it’s not locked away. The third video, “Noticing the Signs and Taking Action,” focuses on teen mental health and the power of supportive friendships. It reminds viewers that helping a friend isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up, listening, and connecting them with help when needed.

The underlying message from Regional Youth Prevention Network is simple—every adult can be a protective force in a young person’s life. Research shows that having at least one trusted adult can dramatically lower the chances of youth engaging in high-risk behaviors or facing mental health struggles. By talking openly, setting clear boundaries, and staying involved, parents and caring adults can help teens thrive. Prevention starts at home—with the right decisions, a locked cabinet, and an open ear.
