Above the Influence

The “Above the Influence” campaign is about more than just saying no to drugs and alcohol—it’s about building the confidence to follow your own path. Gallup McKinley County Schools is bringing this message to life by encouraging students and communities to make decisions that reflect their personal values and goals. Through education and outreach, the program creates an environment where young people are supported in making healthy choices and looking out for each other.

In a new video, students like Mallerie Romero from McKinley Academy share what it means to stay above the influence. Mallerie is determined to graduate with both her high school diploma and an associate degree, aiming for a future as a physical therapist. She emphasizes that focusing on academics, sports, and leadership roles helps her stay on track—and she sees her role as an ambassador as an opportunity to set an example for others. Logan Benali, a student at Tahachi High School, echoes this mindset, proudly declaring his commitment to a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle.

This campaign isn’t just about personal choices—it’s about building a culture where open discussion is encouraged, judgment is left at the door, and students are empowered to be leaders. By sharing their stories, these young people show that staying above the influence isn’t about isolation or missing out, but about investing in their own dreams and creating a stronger, safer future for themselves and their communities.
