Set yourself to flight mode

A growing concern for aviation authorities across Finland and neighboring countries is the marked increase in disruptive passenger behavior on flights. To address this trend, Finnish aviation stakeholders have launched a joint campaign titled “Aseta itsesi lentotilaan” (“Set yourself to flight mode”). This initiative, timed ahead of the busy travel season, seeks to curb behaviors that undermine both flight safety and the travel experience. The campaign brings together key actors in aviation—including airlines, airports, and authorities—who have released a joint statement to raise awareness and promote good conduct on board and at airports.

Central to the issue of disruptive behavior is the misuse of alcohol, which is frequently cited alongside incidents of smoking and disobeying flight regulations. The campaign makes it clear that while 99.9% of passengers follow the rules, a small minority—often under the influence of alcohol—can have an outsized negative impact on fellow travelers and staff. The joint statement emphasizes that excessive drinking is not acceptable on flights, and failing to follow crew instructions, particularly under the influence, can result in serious consequences, including removal from the aircraft, police intervention, or even travel bans.

The Finnish aviation community is committed to a “zero tolerance” approach regarding disruptive behavior, highlighting the need for clear communication and ongoing staff training. Education is seen as key: personnel receive conflict management and de-escalation training, ensuring they are prepared to handle challenging situations efficiently and safely. The campaign also calls for passengers themselves to take responsibility, reminding everyone that safe and pleasant travel requires mutual respect and adherence to rules—especially when it comes to alcohol consumption.

This collaborative campaign is not just about setting rules but about fostering a culture of responsibility in aviation. The joint statement underscores the importance of coordinated communication, continuous staff education, and industry-wide best practices. By addressing alcohol-related disruptions alongside other issues, the “Aseta itsesi lentotilaan” campaign aims to protect both passengers and staff, ensuring that air travel remains safe and enjoyable for all.
