Substance use does not justify violence

The VEERAT project in Finland, a collaboration between A-Kiltojen Liitto and Maria Akatemia, focuses on supporting women who are recovering from substance use and grappling with issues related to intimate partner violence. Recognizing the deep stigma that surrounds the intersection of substance use and violence, the project offers peer support and group-based interventions specifically tailored for women. These activities aim to improve self-awareness, emotional skills, and understanding of violence in relationships, while creating a safe, substance-free space for reflection and growth.

In addition to its support groups, VEERAT carries out national advocacy work to raise awareness of gender-specific needs in substance use and violence services. One of its key initiatives is the poetry exhibition Can you hear me?, created by women participating in the project. The poems—often written collaboratively—reflect their lived experiences, emotions, and hopes for the future. Some of the poems have also been adapted into comic art, and a touring version of the exhibition is being shown across Finland in 2024 and 2025.

VEERAT’s educational activities extend further through writing-based group therapy (Sanoilla näkyväksi), public lectures, and training events. The project also collaborates with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, recently publishing a support card highlighting the vulnerability of women who use substances in relation to intimate partner violence. All group activities are free, voluntary, and designed to meet women in a stable enough life situation, ensuring safe and meaningful participation.

A new video produced by VEERAT reaffirms a key message: “Substance use does not justify violence.” It emphasizes that violence—especially within intimate relationships—must not be downplayed, excused, or silenced, regardless of whether substances are involved. The VEERAT project continues its work in 2025 with adjusted resources and remains a vital voice for women whose experiences are too often overlooked.
