Don’t let alcohol ruin your joy at sea – that’s the core message of Av-og-til’s summer campaign in Norway, focusing on boating safety. The warm season brings many out on the water, but combining alcohol with high speed, unpredictable weather, and limited safety equipment often leads to accidents. Even low levels of alcohol impair key abilities like reaction time and judgment – both essential for safe boating, especially when sudden changes or emergencies occur.
The statistics are sobering: last year, Norway’s rescue service saved 27 people from drowning, while 23 lost their lives in recreational boating accidents. Roughly half of them were under the influence of alcohol, and men over 50 dominate the fatality statistics. The campaign reminds us that responsible seamanship goes beyond navigation skills – it means staying sober and setting a good example, especially when children are on board. Choosing not to drink while boating is a small decision that makes a big difference.
In Norway, the legal blood alcohol limit for operating boats under 15 meters is 0.8‰, but even below that limit, alcohol can impair your abilities. Responsibility isn’t just about numbers – it’s about your attitude. As the campaign puts it: real captains take one for the team. Skipping alcohol on board means protecting yourself, your passengers, and contributing to a safer summer on the water.
