The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new campaign called Say “Yes” to Drinking Less Alcohol, encouraging Iowans to reflect on their drinking habits and consider the benefits of moderation. Through a series of short videos, the campaign highlights how saying “no thanks” to binge drinking means saying “yes” to stronger relationships, better physical and mental health, and a reduced risk of depression, heart disease, and other serious conditions.
Binge drinking—defined as consuming five or more drinks on one occasion for men, or four or more for women—remains a significant issue in Iowa. According to CDC data, 21.8% of adult Iowans reported binge drinking in the past month, placing the state among the highest in the country. Only Montana had a higher reported rate. The campaign’s messages stress the connection between excessive drinking and a wide range of health risks, from cancer and liver disease to anxiety, memory issues, and social challenges.
By promoting moderation and offering tips to reduce alcohol consumption, the campaign aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health. The accompanying website, yourlifeiowa.org, offers support and resources, including 24/7 access to trained counselors for anyone concerned about their alcohol use or that of a loved one.
