Barnsley Recovery Steps has launched a powerful new campaign addressing the rising concern around ketamine use and its severe health consequences. Supported by funding from Barnsley Council, the six-week campaign, which started on 3 March 2025, features impactful videos, sold-out community events, comprehensive ketamine handbooks, and specialized internal training. At the heart of this initiative is “Jack’s Story – A Journey Through Ketamine Use and Recovery,” an animated film detailing the real-life experiences of Jack, whose promising football career was significantly impacted by his ketamine use. Jack’s courageous journey highlights not only the struggles but also the hope and potential for recovery.
In exciting news, Barnsley Recovery Steps’ animated film, “It’s OK to Ask for Help,” has earned a BAFTA nomination and been selected for the London International Animation Festival. This recognition underscores the importance of their work in raising awareness and supporting individuals affected by ketamine use. Central to the campaign’s success was the invaluable input from a focus group consisting of individuals with lived experience, which led directly to the formation of a dedicated ketamine support group and a specialized clinic within the Barnsley Urology Department.
Acknowledging the community’s feedback, Barnsley Recovery Steps ensured their campaign was responsive to real needs by developing targeted resources and tailored support services. Special appreciation goes to Jack for bravely sharing his story, and to the talented Rosy Turner, whose empathy and creativity brought authenticity and depth to this project. Barnsley Recovery Steps continues to commit to ongoing dialogue, ensuring their support evolves to meet community needs, breaking down barriers, and encouraging vital conversations around substance use and recovery.
