The German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the German Road Safety Council (DVR) have launched a new billboard campaign along the country’s highways to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol, cannabis, and distraction while driving. As part of the “Runter vom Gas” initiative, the campaign features striking images and internationally recognized messages such as “Don’t drink and drive” and “Don’t text and drive” to educate drivers about the severe risks of these behaviors.
The billboards are specifically designed to reach young drivers and international road users, as Germany is a major transit country. According to DVR President Manfred Wirsch, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs remains a leading cause of serious accidents. In 2023 alone, nearly 16,000 accidents were caused by alcohol consumption, resulting in 198 fatalities and over 4,200 serious injuries. The campaign emphasizes that alcohol and drugs are incompatible with safe driving and aims to reinforce responsible behavior behind the wheel.
Beyond substance use, the campaign also highlights the dangers of smartphone use while driving. Statistics show that 55% of drivers regularly use their phones while on the road, with the figure rising to 85% among those aged 18 to 29. This distraction leads to thousands of accidents each year. By addressing these risks, the billboard campaign seeks to reduce accident numbers and bring Germany closer to achieving Vision Zero—a future with no road traffic fatalities.
