Brazil stands against substance abuse

On February 20, Brazil marks the National Day to Combat Drugs and Alcoholism, highlighting the importance of prevention and awareness. The Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense of Ceará (SSPDS) emphasizes its efforts to educate communities and change perspectives regarding substance abuse. Through various initiatives, security forces in Ceará work to provide young people with the knowledge and support needed to prevent drug and alcohol use, reinforcing the role of education in fostering healthier choices.

One of the key initiatives in this effort is led by the Division for Student Protection (Dipre) under the Civil Police of Ceará. Dipre organizes preventive actions within schools, including lectures, workshops, and discussion groups. These initiatives aim to address the risks associated with alcohol and drug use while allowing communities to voice their concerns. According to delegate Monique Teixeira, the program tailors its approach to the specific needs of each institution, ensuring that information remains relevant and impactful.

The Military Police of Ceará (PMCE) also plays a crucial role through the Drug Resistance Educational Program (Proerd). Since its launch in 2001, Proerd has reached over 710,000 students across the state, providing education on drug prevention and promoting a culture of peace and citizenship. The program prioritizes schools in vulnerable areas, adapting its content to the realities of different age groups and social contexts. In 2023 alone, 20,548 students participated in Proerd, reinforcing its impact on youth education.

Beyond school-based programs, PMCE also runs the School Security Group (GSE), which conducts preventive initiatives in educational environments. These efforts, which include lectures and community engagement, aim to strengthen the connection between schools, families, and law enforcement. By working together, these institutions create a comprehensive support network that not only raises awareness but also provides young people with the necessary resources to resist substance abuse pressures.
