Changing Tides

Kathryn Georghiou’s film Changing Tides, released on YouTube on February 11, 2025, as part of International Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week, tells a poignant story about end-of-life alcoholism and unexpected hope. Based on a true story, the film follows Bea, a young domestic carer, and Adien, an aging alcoholic nearing the end of his life. Their turbulent relationship evolves into a meaningful bond that transforms them both.

The film delves into the harsh realities of alcoholism through Adien’s deteriorating health and Bea’s growing sense of responsibility. What begins as a battle for control shifts as Bea becomes Adien’s caregiver and Adien confronts his own vulnerabilities. Despite Adien’s efforts to change, the irreversible damage from years of alcoholism takes its toll, leading to a tragic yet peaceful conclusion.

Changing Tides is deeply personal to Georghiou, inspired by her own experiences as the daughter of an alcoholic. Writing the script became a form of therapy, allowing her to understand her father’s struggles and her own unresolved emotions. The film reflects her journey from shame and confusion to acceptance and compassion, aiming to resonate with others who share similar experiences.

With an estimated 2.6 million children in the UK living with an alcoholic parent, Georghiou hopes her film provides a sense of recognition and solace to both adult children of alcoholics and those currently facing similar challenges. Changing Tides stands as a heartfelt tribute to troubled souls seeking understanding and healing, emphasizing that no one is alone in their struggles.
