The Snowball

SAFE Project, in collaboration with FCB Health New York and LOBO, has launched The Snowball, a powerful animated campaign addressing the often-overlooked link between winter months and increased alcohol consumption. Research has shown that colder temperatures and fewer daylight hours can contribute to heavier drinking, potentially leading to addiction, cirrhosis, and other serious health consequences. The Snowball tells the story of Lars, a man whose drinking spirals out of control as the harsh winter progresses. His growing dependence is symbolized by an ever-expanding snowball, which eventually consumes him—illustrating how alcohol misuse can escalate before individuals even realize it. The film’s message is clear: small habits can snowball into major risks if left unchecked.

The animation blends traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, utilizing an innovative technique called 2D Diffusion Render. This method, developed by LOBO, enhances frame-by-frame hand-drawn animations with AI-driven textures, giving the film the warmth and depth of handcrafted stop-motion. Set to Billie Holiday’s Everything I Have is Yours, the haunting soundtrack was a deliberate choice, reflecting both the film’s emotional weight and the singer’s own struggles with substance abuse. The melancholic yet visually stunning film serves as a reminder that alcohol misuse isn’t confined to any season—it can develop at any time, with far-reaching consequences.

Beyond the film, SAFE Project has launched TheSnowball.org, an online resource providing support for those struggling with alcohol dependence, as well as for their loved ones. The campaign also includes social media assets, out-of-home ads, and behind-the-scenes content to drive awareness. By leveraging storytelling, research, and artistry, The Snowball delivers a compelling message: alcohol misuse can creep up on anyone, and recognizing the risks before they snowball out of control is crucial.
