The January Challenge

The French campaign “Le Défi de janvier” invites everyone to take a voluntary break from alcohol consumption for the month of January. This public health initiative, now in its 2025 edition, is uniquely supported and funded solely by organizations such as Addictions France, Addict’Aide, the Société française d’alcoologie, and La Ligue contre le Cancer, among others. France Assos Santé has been a key player since the campaign’s inception, advocating for collective prevention against alcohol, the second leading cause of preventable death after tobacco. A significant development this year is the launch of a distinctly French identity for the campaign.

The timing of this initiative, right after the holiday season, is ideal. It offers individuals a chance to reset, experience the immediate benefits of reduced alcohol consumption, and reflect on alcohol’s role in their social, professional, and personal lives. Whether shared with friends or family, participating in “Le Défi de janvier” is a positive step toward healthier habits and greater self-awareness.

To make the challenge more engaging, the campaign offers the Mydéfi app, providing personalized coaching to track progress and stay motivated. The goal isn’t perfection but participation—a month, a week, or even a few days without alcohol. The campaign emphasizes fun, collective experience, and achievable goals, making it a lighthearted yet impactful opportunity to explore one’s relationship with alcohol.

Participants are also encouraged to contribute to a large-scale public health survey led by INSERM. This initiative aims to better understand alcohol consumption patterns and improve future prevention programs. To further motivate participants, the campaign includes a prize draw with the chance to win an electric bike. “Le Défi de janvier” is open to everyone looking to reassess their alcohol consumption, except for individuals with alcohol dependency, who are advised to seek professional guidance.
