There are plenty of good reasons to be a designated driver

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has launched its annual holiday campaign to raise awareness about impaired driving. Running from December 2 to 29, 2024, this year’s initiative highlights the value of designated drivers as a safe and accessible alternative for ensuring everyone gets home safely. The campaign, titled “Il y a plein de bonnes raisons d’être conducteur désigné” (There are plenty of good reasons to be a designated driver), underscores the simplicity and importance of this role during a festive season filled with social gatherings.

The SAAQ reminds the Quebec population of the various alternatives to impaired driving, such as relying on designated drivers, using services like Opération Nez rouge, calling a taxi, or using public transportation. With the holiday season presenting ample opportunities for celebration, the campaign urges individuals to plan ahead and make safe transportation arrangements. This proactive approach is especially critical in addressing the ongoing issue of impaired driving, which remains a leading cause of road accidents in the province.

Statistics shared by the SAAQ reveal the gravity of the issue. Between 2018 and 2022, alcohol-related accidents accounted for an average of 90 fatalities and 190 severe injuries annually in Quebec. Despite this, surveys show that many individuals still engage in risky behavior, with 43% of respondents admitting to driving within four hours of consuming alcohol and 5% after using cannabis. These behaviors significantly increase the likelihood of road accidents, emphasizing the need for continued public awareness and responsible decision-making.

Eric Ducharme, president and CEO of the SAAQ, stresses that impaired driving is entirely preventable. In a statement, he encouraged the public to embrace the role of a designated driver, describing it as a gesture that not only ensures safety but also fosters pride and gratitude among loved ones. The campaign’s message is clear: road safety is a collective responsibility, and simple choices can save lives during the holiday season and beyond.
