A new campaign by Agence wallonne pour la Sécurité routière (AWSR) encourages individuals to take pride in saying no to alcohol when they are behind the wheel. Titled “Alcool au volant, vous avez le pouvoir de dire NON” (“Drinking and driving, you have the power to say NO”), the campaign highlights the societal shift towards valuing personal boundaries and responsible decision-making. Refusing a drink to drive safely is not only a responsible choice but one that can save lives. This message is particularly timely as December sees a spike in alcohol-related road accidents, especially during festive celebrations like Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
The initiative sheds light on positive trends among younger generations, who are increasingly planning ahead to avoid driving under the influence. Whether by organizing safe transportation, choosing to sleep over, or ensuring guests do not drive impaired, young people are more proactive in tackling this issue. The campaign calls on all generations to follow this example and take simple but effective steps—like choosing alcohol-free options, arranging a designated driver, or planning a taxi ride home—to ensure everyone’s safety during the holiday season.
AWSR also encourages hosts to play a role in preventing alcohol-related accidents. By offering festive non-alcoholic drinks and supporting guests who may need to stay overnight, hosts can contribute to safer celebrations. The key message of the campaign is clear: everyone has the power to say no to alcohol when driving. A simple decision, made with pride, can be the difference that saves lives.
