Nurture the Future Within

New Zealand has launched a new public health campaign, “Nurture the Future Within,” aimed at preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) by promoting alcohol-free pregnancies. The initiative, spearheaded by Health Minister Dr. Shane Reti, seeks to address a critical issue that significantly impacts the nation.

FASD is the leading cause of preventable intellectual and neurodevelopmental disorders in New Zealand. It results in lifelong challenges, including physical, behavioral, learning, and mental health problems. According to Dr. Reti, the social and economic impact of FASD is far-reaching, affecting families, caregivers, and communities alike.

The campaign emphasizes a simple yet vital message: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. It encourages everyone to reflect on how current choices can shape the health and well-being of future generations. Dr. Reti highlights that preventing FASD is a shared responsibility and underscores the importance of following the best public health advice to protect pregnancies from alcohol exposure.

As part of a comprehensive effort, the campaign forms a segment of a broader government initiative to increase education, prevention, and support for individuals and families affected by FASD. Dr. Reti notes that an estimated three to five children are born with FASD in New Zealand every day, underscoring the urgency of addressing the issue. This year, the government has allocated $6.85 million to support eight new initiatives aimed at prevention, education, and care for those impacted by FASD.

Progress has already been made in several key areas. Since the release of new diagnostic guidelines, 30 health professionals have completed specialized training, enhancing their ability to diagnose and support children with FASD and their families. The community-led FASD Pilot Programme has also shown promising results, providing education, support, and access to care for over 215 families across New Zealand. Additionally, work on the FASD Strategic Action Plan is advancing, and a prevalence study is scheduled to begin in mid-2025.

Dr. Reti envisions a future where New Zealand fully understands the prevalence and impacts of FASD, provides robust support for affected individuals and families, and ensures that women have access to the resources needed for alcohol-free pregnancies.
