As the festive season approaches, Cleveland Police (UK) have launched a dedicated campaign to address the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This initiative runs from now through the new year and involves officers conducting roadside stops to test drivers’ breath and saliva for alcohol and drugs. With increased socializing during the holidays, the campaign aims to highlight the life-threatening risks of impaired driving while raising awareness through educational efforts and social media.
The campaign builds on last year’s efforts when 137 drivers were arrested in December 2023 for suspected impairment. Temporary Inspector Scott Pearson of the Cleveland Police Matrix Team emphasized the devastating consequences of impaired driving, noting its potential to cause serious or fatal collisions. “We hope to encourage a change in people’s attitudes towards driving impaired and reduce the number of serious and fatal collisions on our roads,” said Pearson.
The campaign also stresses the importance of understanding how alcohol and drugs can linger in the system, impacting fitness to drive even the following day. A/Inspector Pearson cautioned drivers about the unpredictability of how substances affect individuals, urging them not to take unnecessary risks that could endanger lives. Through education and enforcement, Cleveland Police aim to make the roads safer for everyone this holiday season.
