You’re quite right to drive sober

Flemish mobility minister Annick De Ridder has officially launched the end-of-year edition of the drink-driving awareness campaign “Groot gelijk dat je nuchter rijdt” (“You’re quite right to drive sober”) during a police checkpoint in Antwerp. While alcohol consumption in traffic has been showing a positive trend, the campaign highlights the ongoing need for vigilance. With the festive season in full swing, the initiative focuses on encouraging sober driving to ensure safe roads for everyone.

A survey conducted by the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Studies (VSV) among 600 Flemish motorists aged 18 to 54 revealed a mix of attitudes towards alcohol consumption and driving. Encouragingly, 15% of respondents said they never drink alcohol, and 40% reported never drinking if they plan to drive. However, 39% admitted to limiting their intake to one or two glasses to stay under the legal limit, while a concerning 6% confessed to disregarding limits altogether. Minister De Ridder emphasized the importance of addressing such behaviors, particularly during a period filled with celebrations. “Drinking and driving just don’t go together. You put not only yourself but also those around you in danger. That’s why actions like this are very important,” she stated.

The campaign will be visible through posters along major roads, a campaign video on social media, and downloadable materials available on veiligverkeer.be. Police forces will intensify their checkpoints to reinforce the message. The campaign also advocates for fully alcohol-free choices, promoting safety, relaxation, and a focus on enjoying the moment with friends. Recent trends show a growing preference for completely abstaining from alcohol when driving, with two out of three drivers reportedly opting for a 0.0% alcohol policy. By choosing to drive sober, individuals contribute to safer roads and more joyful celebrations for all.
