Singapore has launched its annual Anti-Drink Drive Campaign, emphasizing the severe consequences of drink driving and the need for responsibility on the roads. During the first nine months of 2024, drink-driving incidents resulted in 10 fatalities and 123 accidents, with 1,260 arrests. Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim highlighted the irreplaceable loss of life caused by such accidents and stressed that offenders will face stringent penalties. Authorities are also exploring innovative ways to deliver anti-drink driving messages, leveraging platforms like TikTok, where educational videos have garnered over two million views.
This year’s campaign introduced a poignant road safety video, “If You Drink, Don’t Drive,” showcasing the devastating impact of impaired driving. The video, available on the Use Your RoadSense Facebook page, aims to raise awareness and encourage safe behaviors. Collaborations with content creators such as The Smart Local and SGAG will further spread the message through engaging online content. In addition, interactive experiences at the campaign launch, such as drunk-goggle driving simulators by Motor Sports Singapore, vividly demonstrated the dangers of impaired vision and overconfidence behind the wheel.
The campaign underscores the efforts of the Traffic Police, who play a central role in driving home the anti-drink driving message. Minister Faishal urged community involvement, encouraging friends and families to take collective responsibility for road safety. Alternatives such as public transport, taxis, or valet services were highlighted as simple ways to ensure safe journeys home. With the festive season approaching, the campaign’s core message resonates strongly: drinking and driving is a dangerous combination that has no place on Singapore’s roads.
