Forging Connections

National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW), held from November 24–30, 2024, highlights solutions to address the harms caused by alcohol and other drug use. This year’s theme, Forging Connections, emphasizes the importance of collaboration among individuals, organizations, and communities in tackling substance use issues. Organized by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA), NAAW offers an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery, while creating awareness and fostering understanding.

Throughout the week, each day focuses on a specific topic, such as cannabis, stigma, opioids, gambling, and alcohol. CCSA provides resources to inform and engage people on these critical issues. For example, the dangers of fentanyl are highlighted, as even small quantities can lead to fatal overdoses, while discussions around alcohol stress its role as a leading cause of death and social problems among young people. These materials not only educate but also encourage meaningful discussions to reduce stigma and find common ground for effective solutions.

By leveraging CCSA’s resources, individuals and organizations can play a vital role in raising awareness and reducing the harms of substance use. From sharing facts about health risks to promoting stigma-free language and support systems, everyone can contribute to positive change. Let’s use this week to forge connections, share knowledge, and work together to improve the lives of Canadians impacted by substance use.
