The Be Nice to Brain campaign, launched in Tasmania, addresses the link between alcohol consumption, mental health, and overall wellbeing. Developed by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) and funded by the Tasmanian Department of Health, this evidence-based digital initiative raises awareness about the risks associated with alcohol use while offering resources and support for reducing or quitting alcohol. Targeting Tasmanians aged 25-44, the campaign aims to fill critical knowledge gaps, with surveys revealing that one-third of Tasmanians are unaware of the alcohol-mental health connection, and many are eager to change their drinking habits.
Grounded in the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Australian Guidelines, the campaign emphasizes that consuming no more than 10 standard drinks a week, and no more than 4 in a single day, can significantly lower the risks of alcohol-related harms. Using animations, a robust social media presence, and an informative website, the campaign delivers clear, practical tips for cutting back on alcohol, highlighting its potential benefits such as improved sleep, mood, and energy levels. Importantly, the campaign incorporates insights from those with lived experiences, as well as input from community organizations and health professionals, ensuring relevance and authenticity.
Be Nice to Brain also aligns with the Tasmanian Government’s broader health strategy, contributing to the Health Tasmania Five-Year Strategic Plan and the state’s 2030 Strong Plan. By fostering conversations about alcohol and mental health, and promoting healthier lifestyle choices, the initiative represents a crucial step in supporting Tasmanians to achieve better health and wellbeing. With the campaign running until mid-2026, its long-term impact on reducing alcohol harm and enhancing mental health awareness is eagerly anticipated.
