Seeing drinking does drinking – 2024

The “Zien drinken, doet drinken” campaign in the Netherlands, supported by the Ministry of Health, is set to raise awareness among parents about the influence of their drinking behavior on young children. Running from November 4 to November 15, 2024, this nationwide initiative targets parents of children aged 2 to 12, with a core message that is often challenging for many: “Don’t drink alcohol when your children are around.” This call to action reflects findings from a recent survey by Breuer and Intraval and Kennispunt Twente, which showed that while most parents recognize that children mimic their drinking habits, only 1 in 5 parents currently avoid drinking in front of their children.

The campaign will share this message on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram through two targeted videos. One video from 2023 shows parents drinking around young children, while a new video highlights how observant children can be when it comes to their parents’ behaviors. According to the survey, about 21% of parents admitted to drinking just as much around their children as they do in other settings, while only 37% said they reduce their drinking in the presence of their children. Additionally, the campaign will collaborate with social media influencers to amplify the message to young parents.

Regional and local organizations across the Netherlands will play a vital role in extending the campaign’s reach. Various campaign materials, including posters, social media templates, and flyers, will be available for local organizations to share. An engaging feature is the “frisviltje” coaster, printed with a QR code that links to a fun, interactive quiz designed to reinforce responsible drinking around children. This and other materials will be distributed through community hubs like health centers, libraries, schools, and sports clubs, helping parents across different regions to access and engage with the campaign’s message in a meaningful way.
