The latest data from Statistics Canada reveals notable trends in the sales of alcohol and cannabis from April 2022 to March 2023. Alcohol sales reached $26.3 billion, with growth seen across all categories, especially in ciders and coolers, which increased by 4.5%. Beer, spirits, and wine followed with smaller gains. In comparison, cannabis sales totaled $4.7 billion, with the highest growth in inhaled extracts (+59%), solid edibles (+27%), and beverages (+25.9%).
Regional spending disparities were also evident, with Northwest Territories residents spending the most per person on alcohol ($1,477) and Yukoners leading in cannabis expenditures at $314 per person. Nationally, the average Canadian adult spent $800 on alcohol and $150 on cannabis over the year. From these sales, governments collected significant revenues, averaging $433 per adult from alcohol and $62 from cannabis.
