When he drank, I got scared…

Dr Ingrid Wilson’s recent speech during a FARE webinar sheds light on the often-overlooked connection between alcohol and gender-based violence, particularly intimate partner violence. Her research, built on 30 years of evidence, highlights how alcohol intensifies men’s violence toward women and examines the lived experiences of women who endure this abuse. Dr Wilson explains how women often face a predictable cycle of violence that corresponds to their partner’s drinking, with many living in constant fear, trying to anticipate or mitigate the violence through various strategies.

This important discussion emphasizes that men’s problematic drinking plays a central role in perpetuating violence against women, and it calls for interventions to address this issue. Dr Wilson’s findings show the widespread psychological, physical, and economic harms experienced by women, often compounded by the stigma of living with an abusive partner who drinks. These voices must be at the forefront of conversations about alcohol-related violence, as we work toward solutions that support survivors and break the cycle of abuse.
