National Drug-Free Work Week

National Drug-Free Work Week, observed from October 14-18, 2024, marks its 16th anniversary, continuing its mission to promote the importance of maintaining a drug-free workplace. Initially launched in 2006 by the U.S. Department of Labor, this campaign was created to address safety concerns within the construction industry through drug-free workplace programs. Over the years, its reach has expanded across various sectors, highlighting the message that “working drug free works.” This year, the National Drug-Free Workplace Alliance, in partnership with the Drug Free America Foundation, is leading the effort, encouraging organizations to educate employees about the risks of substance abuse and reinforce the values of safety and health in the workplace.

A key aspect of National Drug-Free Work Week is promoting the six major components of a successful drug-free workplace program. These include conducting a needs assessment, developing clear policies, educating employees about substance-related issues, and providing supervisor training to detect signs of substance abuse. Employers are also encouraged to implement employee assistance programs (EAPs) to support workers facing personal challenges and to establish drug testing procedures. These measures not only ensure safety but also boost productivity, reflecting the core principle that a drug-free environment benefits both employers and employees.
