RSA campaign: DUI Convictions May Block J1 Visas

The Road Safety Authority (RSA), in partnership with USIT Travel and An Garda Síochána, has launched a new campaign targeting students planning to apply for a J1 visa for summer 2025. The campaign warns that a drink or drug driving conviction could prevent students from obtaining the visa, effectively barring them from working and traveling in the United States. Using social media platforms like Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok, the campaign depicts the contrasting fates of a student who loses the chance to travel due to a driving offence and their friends who enjoy a memorable summer abroad. The RSA emphasizes the importance of responsible driving, urging students to avoid the risk of a disqualification by planning their nights out and ensuring safe transportation.

Sam Waide, RSA’s Chief Executive, and Paula Hilman, Assistant Commissioner of An Garda Síochána, highlighted the severe consequences of driving under the influence. A disqualification not only affects a driver’s license but can also have long-term repercussions, including jeopardizing future visa applications. Students are reminded that Gardaí checkpoints regularly monitor for intoxicated drivers, and any conviction could severely limit their opportunities to study, work, or travel abroad. The campaign runs from September 23 to October 13, aligning with the peak period when students begin planning for their J1 visa applications.
