The North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (NYSCP) has launched the “Who’s in charge?” campaign to raise awareness of the risks associated with alcohol and drug consumption, particularly when caring for children. The campaign highlights the alarming statistics from 2020, where 80 pedestrians, including 20 children, were killed or seriously injured by drink drivers. NYSCP emphasizes the dangers of alcohol and drugs, not only for drivers but for everyone, including vulnerable children at home. It calls attention to how intoxication can make parents less aware of their child’s needs, increasing risks for children, especially in unsafe sleeping environments.
The campaign also focuses on ensuring children’s safety, reminding parents that those under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be unable to properly care for their kids. It encourages sober caregiving and stresses the importance of creating a safe sleeping space to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). With alcohol-related incidents contributing to over 1 in 10 visits to emergency departments, NYSCP urges parents to seek help and make responsible choices to protect their children’s well-being.
