Living with FASD

The video “Living with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder” by the City of Cape Town sheds light on the struggles families face when caring for children affected by FASD. The caregiver in the video describes how even simple daily tasks, like preparing for school and managing schoolwork, can become overwhelming. Despite the challenges, they express the hope for better educational support, particularly through special needs schooling, to help the child thrive. The video also carries an important message for pregnant women: stopping alcohol and smoking is essential for the health of their baby and for the benefit of caregivers who shoulder the responsibility of looking after these children.

In line with ongoing efforts to raise awareness about FASD, the Western Cape FASD Network will soon be launching a new website aimed at providing vital information and resources on the condition. The network, which includes City Health, NGOs, and the Western Cape Education Department, seeks to emphasize that FASD is entirely preventable. By avoiding alcohol during pregnancy, the devastating lifelong effects of FASD can be prevented. This initiative continues to spread the message that no alcohol during pregnancy ensures a healthier future for both children and families affected by the disorder.
